The 2001 Ludington boys soccer team won the 2001 MHSAA Division 3 soccer state championship with a 24-1-2 record. The Orioles won district and regional titles as well as its conference. The team had two first-team All-State players. The Orioles were coached by Fred Horstman and assisted by Chad Horstman, Tim Bryant and Brad Reed. Fred Horstman began the Ludington High School soccer program from scratch and built it into a state powerhouse, including guiding the Orioles to the 2001 Division 3 state championship. Matt Hughes has the distinction of being Ludington's sole Olympian, having competed in the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China in rowing. He finished fifth in the men's quadruple sculls in the Olympics, after earlier winning the world championship in Lucerne, Switzerland.
