Growing up in Ludington, Luke went with his mother, Patricia, to East Grand Rapids, where he became a state champion tennis player during his high school years. Basketball

Ludington High became the first team in Mason County to reach the state finals in basketball. With Pete Tillotson at center, Joe Kowatch coached the Orioles to a 21-2 record and a state runner-up finish in 1952. In 1953, the Orioles were 18-4 and a state semifinalist. Taryn Ezdebski, a Ludington High School graduate, lettered three times in three sports: basketball, volleyball and soccer. She was a key member of the basketball team which advanced to the Class B state semifinals for the first time ever and compiled a best-ever record of 24 wins against three losses.
