Jamie Melchert - High School Athlete Honorees - 2007
The versatile Jamie Melchert earned all-conference honors in softball four times, in basketball and in volleyball twice. She was also all-area in volleyball twice and in softball twice. Felled by a serious injury, Melchert dropped out of school, taking a rare ‘red-shirt’ year as allowed by the Michigan High School Athletic Association, while rehabbing her surgical-repaired knee. She came back in 2006-2007 and earned all-West Michigan Conference honors in volleyball and softball and helped lead both teams deep into the state tournament. “Jamie was just a pleasure to coach,” said Central volleyball coach Scott Stone, whose team posted a best-ever record of 52-9-3. “She received our Lady Spartan Award; she never gave up. What adds to her value is her floor presence. The other kids hear her, they watch her, she leads from the back row or the front row. She was the voice of our team. She truly represents what a Spartan is,” Stone added. A 3.81 student, Melchert is a 12-time Academic All-Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winner, a National Honor Society member and an H. G. Bacon Academic Excellence Award winner. Jamie is going to Muskegon Community College and will play volleyball and softball.
