Chase Barnett - High School Athlete Honorees - 2014
Chase Barnett leaves Mason County Central with many school records and state titles in tow after a standout four-year career. He was a four-year star in cross country and track and field while playing two years of boys basketball at Central, one year on the varsity.
He was a four-time All-State honoree in cross country, finishing as the state runner-up twice and placing third once. He set the record at Central's home course, Riverside Park, and was the school's most valuable runner twice.
In track, Barnett set records in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, eclipsing records that were nearly 30 years old. He won a state championship twice in the 1,600 and was a four-time all-stater in that event.
Barnett also won state titles in the 800-meter run and the 3,200-meter relay. With Barnett, Central won back-to-back Division 3 state runners-up trophies.
Barnett earned a 3.87 grade point average while volunteering with the Mason County Reformed Church's youth group, the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also helped with highway clean-ups and worked with a middle school youth group.
Barnett is attending the University of Michigan in the fall where he will run for the Wolverines. He is the son of 2005 Mason County Sports Hall of Famer Jeff Barnett and his wife, Tracey.
